Was there ever doubt of a better tomorrow,
That hope for life, no hidden sorrow.
Days of sadness a thing of the past,
People saying, have I found something at last.
Days of emptiness gone for good,
The void in your heart now filled
That you thought never would.
When you opened the window
Day or night, see the light,
Fear gone, loneliness distant, freedom in sight.
Do we need Gods light to find
Our inner and outer mind?
Tell me spirit, do you alone know?
Do you help it in a child to grow?
If reason in flesh is so blind
Then it matters not to be unkind,
Is God really the first and the last?
The Alpha and Omega of the past.
Words are spoken, there’s no God
That rules the earth with iron rod.
No angels! Fallen, or on the wing,
No hell below for fear to bring
I’ve been to dinner and overeaten
And drunk a whisky or maybe three,
I’ve taken a couple of settlers,
And I’ve had a really good slash.
(That’s Brit slang for having a wee.)
I’ve put out the old burglar alarm
And unlocked the back door,
I’ve turned out the moggie,
And decided I’ll just have one more.
Now I’m alone, here in the dark
And I kissed the wife that I know,
And that never did me any harm,
Would you believe it she won’t let me go.
Whatever is that horrible noise?
Did our clock just strike one?
Oh, thank goodness it’s only the wife,
Mouth wide open, singing her favourite song.
Now I’m not alone in the dark
I must have counted a hundred sheep,
I’ve bonked Bo Derek how many times?
Maybe have another go with Bo Peep.
What am I to do, have another drink?
Can’t put the light on, or read a book,
Sneak downstairs, might wake old moo,
She’s no Bo Derek, but a bloody good cook
I never yearn for wealth or fame
I'm content, but sometimes criticize and blame,
but happy is my heart to know
it as constant rhythm to and fro.
Yet as youth decays and age comes to pass
and flesh and bones lie beneath the grass,
no light from the sun, or sound to hear
the moon its sleepy face forever near.
Our inheritance with time we pay
for here underneath the earth we lay,
for you in sadness at present above
in false enjoyment without our love
The sky is heavy dark and overcast,
Its cold, and the rain starts to fall,
Now that its come how long will it last?
Most of the trees have shed their leaves
But still a few hang on in defiance,
Waiting for the winter winds to blow
and free them from their alliance.
The memories come flooding to my mind
Fast and quick like flowing water,
Compressed there, hard strong and firm
Just like the bricks held fast in mortar.
Life can be grey just like the sky
Yet above the clouds hidden from view,
The sun is shinning, awakening all
To life’s treasures, hopes and dreams anew
Where ever you go you will see it
Sometimes I just don’t believe it,
But that’s life, full of surprises,
Natures variety in various sizes.
When I walk down the street
For certain I’m sure to meet,
Who’s determined to exterminate.
Who me? But I’m on the pavement
Well! That sure is a statement,
Its pointless to say “take care”,
He just turns and gives you a stare.
The paths of pedestrians he may cross
Have often heard him say,
“Sod off, I don’t give a toss,
Don’t get in my f---king way”.
Oh dear, now I’m confused
The wrong rhyme I have used,
I should have known to rehearse
So lets make this the last verse.
When I was two he was my Daddy
On reaching six, I dropped the dy.
But you know, I still liked Daddy,
Mum said “change it back! Don’t cry.”
But, I had to be like my brother
Do you think that sounds sad?
He said Father instead of the other,
And after a week, I kinda liked Dad.
When Dads at work he’s gone awhile
He sure is the best, and phones every day.
You know when he’s talking there’s a smile,
Believe me there’s always lots to say.
My dad was a soldier, yea! A marine
But never shared our Mummy’s fears.
Afghanistan and Iraq my Dad as been,
Since 2007, why that’s over two years.
Dad’s coming home we hope tomorrow
He’s a hero, for all this palaver.
Mummy’s fears have turned to sorrow
And I never got chance to call him father
No secret, I am a soldier
And soldiers all have fear.
Flesh and blood with feelings.
For that I must make clear.
Training is the same for her
But when its time to kill
This is me, my soldiers fear
This one I will over come.
For my duty is always there
To fight any given battle
Even if it cannot be won.
Am I absolved for killing?
Their loss in this house?
And your absence of presence,
Is it not better, surely to live?
I know this is your country
It’s sad you're not a friend.
Though my home is far away
And see this conflict end.
A soldier’s task is not easy
Like hostility will always be.
Death from war is destruction
And in this country here,
The whole world waits to see.
Will I know if it is my end
In which comrades and I bleed,
But different thoughts I pen.
My love and life are yours
And you are not alone, but
My return I know not when..
I wander among the white doors of stone
And vast landscape with treasure below,
For beneath this earth is life's loss
Defending country against our foe.
Life's journey for you abruptly ended
The speeding bullet found its mark,
Through flesh and bone it entered
Ending dreams and mortal spark.
Some would say it was from birth
Your fate on destiny's wheel,
That bond to age and frailty missed
Is taken, gone with no repeal.
No longer do you hear or feel
That youth now captured forever yours
Our gratitude will never wane.
Truce for you no one can break
No greater sacrifice could you give,
Now in sleep are your desires
And peace in infinity you live.
A medal pinned on silent breast
Your blanket fields of green,
Absence of pennies on your eyes
Would never hide the things you've seen.
See no more the field of battle
No need for courage or fear,
Duty done above and beyond
Rest secure with comrades here.
All the flags of allied nations
Here to dust our hero's lie,
Name in epitaph before us
Engraves the mind with tears to cry.
A place of death, a place of peace
Years have passed that day you fell,
Last post resounds from bugle call
With hurting heart I say farewell..
It’s Hard to be a Soldier
“Hey! Keep your head down mate
Those snipers out there don’t care,
Do you want to see your brains
Scattered all over there?”
As he pointed to the place
Where a soldier, his best pal fell,
Wishing him in heaven now
While the living were in hell.
“Its hard to be a soldier here
Keeping spick span and proper,
But try to keep your head down
Or for sure you’ll come a cropper”.
“That’s good advice he’s given”
Said a soldier, sat playing cards,
“Good snipers can take your eye out
Just short of a thousand yards”.
A shout went out, “Gas masks on”
Those words all soldiers dread,
And shots rang out from a thousand yards
And two new recruits lay dead.
Many times they had to say
“Keep your heads down and all’s well”,
But they’re safe now in heaven
While their comrades are living in hell.
You were a soldier, you were a friend
Now in this shallow grave you lie,
Words are thoughts in silence unspoken
You find your peace in death
Lucky I am with my tears to cry..
If life for me should end to-day
And just like you my duty done,
I'll join you in a shallow grave
To lie beneath this marker here
For those to find when war is won..
Hear the Lewis guns RATTLE, RATTLE
Its death is speeding over head,
If we could only stop the time
If only, and save another 1000 dead..
Who are you, my foe over there
Your rank, your age, and name,
Its better for us we do not care
Here in this deadly game.
You could say we were headstrong
Young to stand upon this ground,
Most of us now feel years older
Till the sound of silence can be found..
The sky is heavy dark and overcast,
Its cold, and the rain starts to fall,
Now that its come how long will it last?
Most of the trees have shed their leaves
But still a few hang on in defiance,
Waiting for the winter winds to blow
And free them from their alliance.
The memories come flooding to my mind
Fast and quick like flowing water,
Compressed there, hard strong and firm
Just like the bricks held fast in mortar.
Life can be grey just like the sky
Yet above the clouds hidden from view,
The sun is shinning, awakening all
To life’s treasures, hopes and dreams anew.
She had seen him through the window
Walking up the path to her door,
She would have just heard someone knocking
but had seen the uniform he wore.
Feeling her emotion trying to
Tear itself from that hidden place,
With her mind in rehearsal for this moment
All she could see was her sons face.
Had the knocking started? She could
Hear a voice repeating in her brain,
“Get out, don’t want you there”, she shouted,
“I just cannot stand this pain”.
The knocking came, it was unwelcome,
To opened that door all would be true,
Her fingers grasped for the door handle
She knew there was no chance to review.
This was her bad dream, but now
Awake, there’s no time to prepare,
“Oh why did I look through the window?”
This truly is a mothers nightmare.
The sun hurt her eyes, she smiled
At the caller. He was standing there in
His best uniform, he did not return the smile.
He spoke, she did not hear him.
My life’s been good and I’ve enjoyed it,
More than a place to rest, for what’s to be.
But now its time to have a break
And enjoy a new life for all eternity.
I’ve travelled many happy journeys,
And taken detours along the way.
I guess I must have learned something,
One thing for sure, we’re not meant to stay.
Unknown journey, have I enough faith?
Have I? Do I really, really know.
Will my travel be the speed of light?
Or quicker than that, or slower than slow.
As this Life’s stepping stone fades away,
With new beginning, when journey ends.
We’ll claim our reward, everlasting peace
Together with the Lord, and all my friends.
Let me take a walk its a fair night
Down country lane full moon bright.
And as tall trees blot out its ray
Surrounding darkness gives fear to run away.
Hold fast for in this twilight gloom
This short eclipse will be over soon.
Must be cheerful on this night walking
Listen the silence, just night owls calling.
Optic sense's react to the moonless glare
Nights master losers advantage, be where!
But look, see the moon show its face
High up through that leafy space.
Light shows the way now don't despair
Before darkness came there was nothing there.
And as we reach our journeys end
A glance to sky to thank our friend..
